How To Keep Your Morning Joe Healthy, And What It Can Do For You

If you’re a caffeine addict like most of us, the chances are that you feel like you can’t function without your morning cup of Joe. After many stories in the media about how coffee is really bad for your health, you might feel as though you should give it up in favor of something less caffeinated. However, the good news is that new research has shown that coffee can actually be good for you, as long as you drink it in the right way. It’s packed with antioxidants – in fact it has more of them than vegetables and fruit combined – but there are a few things you can do to make your morning brew even healthier. Here are our top tips.

Don’t Drink Coffee After 2pm

This might be a tricky one for you caffeine addicts out there, however evidence shows that caffeine after 2pm is bad for your health. As it’s a stimulant, it interferes with sleep and this in turn causes a host of health issues. If you really need to drink a coffee in the evening, opt for a decaffeinated variety.

Avoid Sugar

If you like your coffee to be super sweet, it might be time to reconsider. Coffee might be healthy, but sugar really isn’t. In fact, sugar is one of the worst things you can add to your diet since it causes diabetes and obesity. If you like your coffee sweet, try switching to natural sweeteners such as stevia instead.

Drink Organic Coffee

Although coffee is good for you, drinking a quality, organic coffee is best of all. Coffee beans are sometimes sprayed with chemicals and pesticides which are bad for our health. However, organic coffee beans are safe and should offer you all of the benefits with no harmful side effects.

Don’t Drink Too Much Coffee

Although drinking coffee in moderation is healthy, drinking it excessively could negate those health benefits. Drinking too much caffeine could have unwanted side effects depending on how sensitive you are to it. One cup of coffee could contains as much as 95mg of caffeine, so that means if you weigh around 176 lbs, you shouldn’t have more than a maximum of 4 to 6 cups per day. For most people, this is quite sufficient. However, if you drink more than that, you should opt for a decaf.

Add Some Cinnamon

Coffee is delicious, but with a touch of cinnamon added, it’s even better. Cinnamon really complements the taste of coffee while also lower cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose levels. It also adds some delicious flavor that’s hard to beat. Just don’t add too much – excess cinnamon could have negative side effects.

Avoid Artificial And Low Fat Creamers

Although low fat creamers might sound like they’d be good for you, in fact they are very processed and contain some questionable ingredients. It’s always better to add whole foods to your drinks, so go for a full fat cream or cow’s milk. You’ll find that these contain valuable nutrients like vitamin K and calcium which are good for your well-being anyway.

Add A Touch of Cocoa

If you’ve ever tasted a coffee mocha, you’ll know just how delicious a touch of cocoa can be in your morning brew. Cocoa is packed with antioxidants and therefore it is linked to numerous health benefits such as a lower chance of developing heart disease. It also adds some lovely flavor to your beverage. Don’t add sugar though – if your coffee mocha isn’t sweet enough you could always add some stevia.

Brewing your coffee safely is key to obtaining maximum health benefits. If you’re filtering your coffee, always use a paper filter as this will allow antioxidants and caffeine to pass through while filtering out cafestol which is known to raise your cholesterol levels.
